Bridging Voices Between Shore and Sea.

Ocean Conservation Research (OCR) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit committed to mitigating the impacts of human industry on marine life through the power of education, science, and research. At OCR, we envision an ocean where nature’s symphony drowns out industrial noise. Through our devotion to energy conservation, we aim to mitigate the impacts of human industry on the ocean, her inhabitants, and our climate. We imagine a reality where the ocean thrives, and humanity thrives too.

Ocean Policy Action

We drive marine protection through policy advocacy. Advancing noise policies annually in Washington, DC, and blocking the 2017-2022 offshore oil leasing plan, we turn science into action. By publishing hundreds of newsletters linking ocean noise science to policy and submitting critiques of Environmental Impact Statements, we ensure science shapes decision-making to protect marine ecosystems.

Youth Education

Connecting underserved youth to the wonders of marine environments through hands-on learning experiences. From exploring the San Francisco Bay with hydrophones to listening to underwater sounds and trawling for zooplankton, we provide unique opportunities to uncover the hidden life of the ocean. These experiences ignite curiosity and foster a passion for marine science and conservation.

Scientific Conservation

Science is the foundation of our conservation work. From publishing papers on marine bioacoustics and presenting research globally to innovating terms like “ocean soundscapes” and “kurtosis,” we’ve advanced noise impact standards and redefined how noise pollution is understood beyond protected species. Partnering with the U.S. Navy, we’ve also helped advance funding for critical ocean noise research.
